Room to Grow

Decorating a child's room can be fulfilling and fun, even if it does require a little bit of planning! There is however no need to constantly alter the look of the room as they grow; instead combine great looks with practicality and versatility and you can create an environment that can be easily adapted over the years.

By introducing new furnishings or sprucing up existing items, a room can be transformed with very little cost and in no time at all:

  • Use accessories and soft furnishings such as cushions, throws or rugs to add colour and comfort.
  • Paint furniture to co-ordinate with bed linen and give it a fresh lease of life. Add door knobs to draws or cupboards to link to a theme or add interest to an old piece of furniture.
  • Use lighting to create a certain mood - a bubble lamp by the bed, a light-up globe on the desk or funky fairy lights around the bed.
  • Replace curtains with a blind or add voiles to soften a look.
  • Have a dedicated shelf to display special items such as christening gifts, toy cars, or special treasures.Design storage solutions to form an integral part of a scheme and use existing space effectively - floor level drawers are great for bulky toys or sports equipment whilst a narrow alcove is perfect for housing books.
  • Add a chalk or magnetic memo board to record social arrangements or homework requirements.
